White Noise, Whistling and Silence

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

One persons white noise is another persons sound track.

We live in the iPod age, with a television in every room and a radio in the shower. The choice of car stereo is more important than the power plant, in your vehicle purchase. We buy a mobile phone to get an MP3 player and run a GPS to talk to us loudly over the radio and our conversation.

Bring back whistling I say.
Make your own music. Be your own wall of sound. Enjoy the controlled rush of air through your own mouth, modulated and molded. Entertain yourself - unplugged.

Better yet - be silent ….

Life should be an Ordered File System?

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

My search for an ordered life goes on.
Cataloging life’s experiences can be a really satisfying activity, best enjoyed slowly and with a nice Riesling.

A neat and tidy sock draw.
A kitchen cupboard that allows you to find every can of beans.
An easily searched image library.
A herb garden with no sour sobs or over hanging mulch.
A well structured data system on the server.
An ordered mind.
A simple straight forward thought process.
A clear path to follow.

But then you miss the happy coincidence that flows from chaos and the crazy opportunity which appears from nothing.

There’s that irritating concept of balance again.
Seeking that structural balance to life which allows for a sane progression through the day without resorting to such rigid adherence to that structure, that all other possibilities are denied.

Life should be an ordered file system, however it is a data jumble and the human experience would appear to be finding random pattern in that jumble.

More easily Said than done.

Low Light Digital

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Digital cameras are just brilliant at image capture in low light. No messing with equipment and tripods and extended exposures, just steady yourself and click.
Cool fun.

Sun Rise and Sun Set - the photographers time.

What is really happening is that we are trying to alter our perception and allow ourselves to view things from that altered perspective. Easier to access than mind altering drugs, less harmful and a truck load more beautiful. Let the low light find the unique view point.

Spotlight on the detail.
Depth of field to focus on the negative space.
Angular, stark, highlighted, mystic.
Why is candle light the light of romance?
It becomes easy to see the substance in low light - less distraction.

Sun Rise and Sun Set - the photographers time.

The theory of Horizons

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

I subscribe to the theory that it is important for the psyche to see a full horizon every now and then - the more frequent the better.
The view from a mountain - looking out to sea - a wide desert.

Looking up forces the eyes to re-focus and encourages the heart to do the same.

Seeing a horizon so wide I can see the curve of the earth, now that is a sensual curve.

Your priority is not necessarily mine

Monday, May 12th, 2008

One of my pet peeves is the prevalent belief that my time is more important than your time.

I guess from the ego point of view that is true, but in all real world relationships a bit more give and take is required.

My time is important to me, your time is important to you, out of mutual respect lets be as efficient as we can in the use of that time.

Simplistic perhaps, but apply the principle when you are over whelmed by volume or options - respect time.
